The increasing degree of complexity associated with the production of knowledge represents a challenge for universities in terms of the accessibility and the transferability of this knowledge. The ability to transfer knowledge in the interests of facilitating exchange between research, business and society is growing in importance. Universities play a central role here in national and international innovation systems. Besides the traditional task-based areas, research and teaching, this ‚Third Mission‘ is currently receiving more attention. Taking knowledge transfer into account in all academic disciplines will, as a result, become another key task of universities and needs to extend beyond the pure commercialisation of the knowledge generated and its dissemination in a business context.
